The termite barrier your landscaper built over
Every bridged barrier was created by somebody trying to improve the place.
In short: A barrier only works if termites have to cross it. Build over it and they simply go around.
How a barrier works
It creates a treated or physical zone termites cannot cross undetected between the soil and the structure.
What bridging means
Something has been built or grown over that zone so the barrier can be bypassed entirely without ever being crossed.

The usual causes
Raised garden beds, added paving, rendered edges and built up soil levels, all added in good faith years after the build.
Fixing it
Reinstating the inspection zone, which usually means cutting back levels and paving rather than anything structural.
